Pinpoint Adventure and National Trust: Snowshoeing Guidance Notes

The snowshoeing takes place on Hadrian’s Wall; starting and finishing at Housesteads Roman Fort on the B6318/Military Road (Northumberland). From here we will do a circular route involving some of the best sections of Hadrian’s Wall, the Pennine Way and Broomlee Lough.

We will meet at the Housesteads car park (Grid ref: NY 794 684) at 9:45am. Depending upon prevailing weather conditions it is anticipated that the day will finish at approximately 3pm.

What does a day snowshoeing involve?
There will be an introductory briefing, all the specialist kit will be given out and we will then cover some basic principles of snowshoeing.
The day will give course participants an opportunity to undertake a journey on snowshoes. (If you can walk you can snowshoe!)
We will also aim to cover a selection of key winter walking skills, such as navigation and emergency snow shelters. In addition, we would hope to have a go at some fun activities, including sledging.
The aim is for it to be a very enjoyable day out, with a selection of new skills and experiences.

What do I need to bring?

  • Yourself (a basic level of fitness is required to go snowshoeing; we will be covering approximately 6 kilometres with total ascent of ~300 metres).
  • Rucksack; containing a packed lunch and fluid/hot drinks for the day.
  • A good pair of boots (with at least one thick pair of socks).
  • Appropriate winter clothing – including plenty of warm clothing, a spare top, waterproofs, warm hat, gloves and spare gloves.
  • Trekking poles – if you have them.
  • Sunglasses and sun tan cream (Sun reflecting on snow can be very bright).
  • Participant Information Forms – filled out (to be given to Tom when you arrive).

Pinpoint Adventure will provide:

  • Snowshoes (Adults and children’s sizes are available).
  • Trekking poles – if participants don’t have their own.
